Glenn Maxwell fumes at ‘s**t’ question after Kings XI Punjab’s loss in IPL T20

Kings XI Punjab fell to their second successive defeat on Saturday as Delhi Daredevils thrashed them by 51 runs to climb to the third spot on the table.

It was a day when nothing worked in favour of the Punjab franchise — their bowlers conceded 188 runs and their batsmen failed to even come close to the total. Captain Glenn Maxwell, himself fell for his first duck of the season as he holed one to deep mid-wicket. Indian all-rounder Axar Patel (44) was the only to provide a fightback but he lacked support as Kings XI Punjab failed to chase down Delhi Daredevils’ total.

In the post-match conference, Maxwell admitted that his side had to up their game in all departments. However, he took exception to a question on whether he had difficulties playing against spin. This was the first time he fell to spin in the IPL this season, with Amit Mishra taking his wicket. The Kings XI Punjab skipper was not impressed.

“That’s a shocking question,” Maxwell said. “Do you understand in the last three games I’ve hit leg-spinners for six repeatedly? S*** question.” Of the 17 players to have aggregated more than 100 runs in the IPL this season, Maxwell tops the chart in terms of strike rate — a staggering 193. He’s hit nine sixes in the IPL 2017 so far and is just behind AB de Villiers, who has smashed 10 sixes.

IPL Gujarat Lions or Bengal Tiger, who will roar louder? IPL 2017 Match 3 Predections

A top-heavy Gujarat Lions would look to better their debut season’s success and aim for a winning start against two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders in an Indian Premier League match, here today.

Gujarat Lions were the table-toppers at the end of the league stage in the last IPL, but finished third after defeats in the two Qualifiers against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

But this time around, the Suresh Raina-led side would look to go one step up in only their second season of the IPL.

Gujarat Lions boost of a robust batting line-up and were the only team last year to score 70 or more in the powerplay.

Five of Gujarat Lions batsmen — Raina, Aaron Finch, Brendon McCullum, Dinesh Karthik and Dwayne Smith — were among runs in the last IPL. They also have the likes of Jason Roy and in-form Dinesh Karthik in their rank.

Having defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in both home and away games in the previous season, Gujarat Lions also enjoy a psychological advantage over them.

On the bowling front, Gujarat Lions have an effective new-ball pair in Dhawal Kulkarni and Praveen Kumar.

Kulkarni’s 14 wickets in the powerplay were the most for any bowler in 2016, and he combined well with Praveen.

But Gujarat Lions will miss two of their key players — Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo, who is out injured early on.

Washington Sundar Prepares to Fill in Ravichandran Ashwin’s Boots: IPL 2017

Chennai: Picked as a replacement for injured Ravichandran Ashwin in Rising Pune Supergiant, all-rounder Washington Sundar says he is gearing up to fill in the big boots of the “legend” whenever he gets a chance to play.

Sundar, who bats left-handed and bowls right-arm off-spin, was picked following a trial by the franchise a few days ago after Ashwin was ruled out of IPL-10 to help him recover from a sports hernia.

“I am very happy to be picked to replace Ashwin, who is a legend. I’m also excited to get the opportunity to be part of the IPL. I don’t have any expectations going into the tournament. I will have to be ready if I get a chance to play,” Sundar told PTI.

IPL 2014: Dinesh Karthik confident of Delhi

New Delhi: May 2, 2014

Delhi Daredevils vice-captain Dinesh Karthik feels playing their next four games at home gives the struggling unit a chance to bounce back in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014.

Things have not gone according to plan for Daredevils, who built a fresh squad at the auction thinking the strategy would work for them in the IPL 7 after getting the wooden spoon last season. They are placed seventh out of eight teams after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) leg of the IPL 2014.

Karthik said the team is eager to put up a good show at the Ferozeshah Kotla where it plays Rajasthan Royals first up.

“At the moment I don’t know what the expectations are of the team. We are looking forward to play good cricket for our home fans,” Karthik said after a practice session at the Palam Ground in Delhi on Friday.

“It is a very crucial phase of the tournament. If we can win a few games from here on and get some momentum going, that will be really good,” said the wicket-keeper batsman.

Asked about the significance of playing at home, Karthik replied: “You try and win as many matches on your home ground. You even pick your team at the auction thinking your best chance will be winning at home. Having said that, I think you need to pick up teams which are capable of doing well home and away.”

Though Daredevils can do better in all departments, the bowling looks their weakest link with not much variety in the spin department and injured pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile ruled out of the tournament. South African leggie Imran Tahir is expected to be Coulter-Nile’s replacement but he is reportedly having issues in getting the Indian visa.

“Definitely we are considering getting an extra spinner. We will sit down and finalise on that soon,” said Karthik when asked about the Australian’s replacement.
