IPL 2017 Match 18, Result : Manish Pandey, Yusuf Pathan fifties script Kolkata’s victory over Delhi

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) rode on a brilliant batting effort from Manish Pandey and Yusuf Pathan to beat Delhi Daredevils by four wickets in a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 match at the Feroz Shah Kotla here on Monday.

Pandey, who remained unbeaten on 69 off 49 balls rescued the visitors with a brilliant 110-run fourth wicket stand with Pathan (59) to turn the tide in favour of the visitors after a dreadful start.

Needing nine from the last over, Mishra got Chris Woakes stumped off his second delivery but couldn’t prevent Pandey from hitting him for a six off the fourth ball and then leaked two runs off the next to lose the tie.

Earlier, skipper Zaheer Khan gave Delhi a perfect start with the wickets of his opposite number Gautam Gambhir (14) and Colin de Grandhomme (1) while Pat Cummins sent back one down Robin Uthappa (4) to reduce the visitors to 21/3.

Zaheer struck in the opening over of the innings to remove KKR’s debutant de Grandhomme, who holed out a short of length delivery to give a simple catch to Sam Billings at deep square leg.

IPL 2017 Match 18, DD vs KKR : Delhi Daredevils aim to come alive at the death against balanced KKR

At Delhi Daredevils’ opening press conference, skipper Zaheer Khan emphasised on depth, the former India pace spearhead explaining that the team had got fast-bowling all-rounders who could provide thrust at the death overs.

In T20, the last five overs are often decisive, and Chris Morris, Corey Anderson and Pat Cummins have been Daredevils’ architects there, with bat and ball. Cummins and Anderson came on board this season, while Morris has been delivering the goods since the last edition.

LATE THRUST

Delhi have played three games, winning two. Against Rising Pune Supergiant, it was Morris’s 9-ball 38 that took Delhi to 205, with a stand of 80 runs in the last 30 balls. His spell of 1/19 then choked Pune. On Saturday, against Kings XI Punjab, Morris slammed 16 off 8 balls alongside Anderson, who hit all but eight runs in his unbeaten 39 in the last 10 balls. Punjab lost steam in the middle overs and Morris’s 3/23 sealed it for Delhi.

“All-rounders’ role in shorter formats will always be crucial. Morris can get wickets in the first six overs and at the death. He has got a lot of variations, and even Anderson can vary in the death with an over or two. Both are big hitters, and with a view to balance the team, Delhi has invested in both at No 6 and 7,” Daredevils bowling mentor TA Sekar said.

Glenn Maxwell fumes at ‘s**t’ question after Kings XI Punjab’s loss in IPL T20

Kings XI Punjab fell to their second successive defeat on Saturday as Delhi Daredevils thrashed them by 51 runs to climb to the third spot on the table.

It was a day when nothing worked in favour of the Punjab franchise — their bowlers conceded 188 runs and their batsmen failed to even come close to the total. Captain Glenn Maxwell, himself fell for his first duck of the season as he holed one to deep mid-wicket. Indian all-rounder Axar Patel (44) was the only to provide a fightback but he lacked support as Kings XI Punjab failed to chase down Delhi Daredevils’ total.

In the post-match conference, Maxwell admitted that his side had to up their game in all departments. However, he took exception to a question on whether he had difficulties playing against spin. This was the first time he fell to spin in the IPL this season, with Amit Mishra taking his wicket. The Kings XI Punjab skipper was not impressed.

“That’s a shocking question,” Maxwell said. “Do you understand in the last three games I’ve hit leg-spinners for six repeatedly? S*** question.” Of the 17 players to have aggregated more than 100 runs in the IPL this season, Maxwell tops the chart in terms of strike rate — a staggering 193. He’s hit nine sixes in the IPL 2017 so far and is just behind AB de Villiers, who has smashed 10 sixes.

IPL 2017, Match 15 Result : Delhi Daredevils beat Kings XI Punjab by 51 runs

When you look at the teamsheets of various IPL franchises, they always throw up one or more star names. Players that can fill stadiums, whom people will come in to watch over and over again, the ones who are mega draws at the box office. Some teams have many such players — Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Lions, and Royal Pune Supergiant. Others — Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad — make do with a couple of them.

This is the USP of this franchise league. It is the generous mix of Indian as well as overseas big-ticket cricketers all coming together to form singular units who then compete for the ultimate prize. And it is good business — for organisers, broadcasters, franchise owners, and cities/states owning stadiums, et al.

Delhi Daredevils team celebrate vs KXIP

Weirdly enough though, Delhi Daredevils don’t necessarily adhere to this norm. Look up their teamsheet. Which name inspires the same selling point? They don’t really have a high-profile Indian cricketer on their rolls. Yes, Mohammed Shami and Amit Mishra are there, but when was the last time bowlers filled up seats in any format of the game, least of all T20 cricket?

Karun Nair hasn’t done much since scoring his triple hundred. Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant are barely recognisable even when loitering about in crowded hotel lobbies. Among the overseas players, Quinton de Kock, Carlos Brathwaite, Corey Anderson and Chris Morris, all have decent value, but most of it pertains to what they can do on the field. Selling t-shirts, a synonym for star power, isn’t really their forte when it comes to Delhi’s franchise.

Maybe Zaheer Khan, but he is one for the oldies, who still swear by the golden generation and is quickly approaching his sell-by date. In that sense, Rahul Dravid is still their alpha name. But, for a franchise reeling under a spate of poor results since 2012, this isn’t about star attraction. This is about getting the right processes down, picking the optimal balance in the squad, and for that, if they have to play with a bunch of ‘relative’ unknowns, then so be it.

In other words, ‘experience’ is the watchword herein, at least that is what names like Zaheer and Dravid signify. You can also relate it aplenty with the likes of Mishra, Shami, Anderson, Morris and Brathwaite, who have excellent know-how of different formats in varied conditions. Even someone as young as Sam Billings too falls into this category as he has played in three different franchise T20 leagues.

IPL 2017, Match 15 Preview : Delhi Daredevils Vs. Kings XI Punjab

Having enjoyed a massive victory over Rising Pune Supergiant in their last game, the Delhi Daredevils will look to make it two in a row when they take on the Kings XI Punjab at the Feroz Shah Kotla tonight. Meanwhile, Punjab will want to get back to winning ways after KKR ended their unbeaten run.

Delhi Daredevils certainly found their mojo against the Rising Pune Supergiant with Sanju Samson smashing the first 100 of IPL 2017 to power his side to a massive score of 205, before Zaheer Khan and Amit Mishra led the way with the ball, dismissing Pune for a paltry 108 to secure a massive 97 run victory.

But Delhi certainly won’t have it easy against Kings XI Punjab who were on a roll prior to their first loss.  Punjab were done in largely due to Yadav’s heroics with the ball, who took 3 wickets in 1 over at the death to reel back Punjab, who were looking ominous until then, and Gambhir’s with the bat, who smashed an unbeaten 72 off only 49 balls.  Delhi will certainly need their star players to deliver to stand a chance of winning the tie.

Moreover, Feroz Shah Kotla might be a fortress, but is hardly one for Delhi Daredevils, they have an unimpressive 19 wins and 29 defeats at their ‘home’ ground.
