IPL 2012 Preview: Bangalore Vs Pune Warriors, 11 May 2012

    Category: IPL,IPL Pune Warriors

Pune Warriors India have just pride to play for while Royal Challengers Bangalore would do a world of good to their play-off chances if they win Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between the two sides, here tomorrow.

After their crushing nine-wicket win over Mumbai Indians, Bangalore are placed fourth in the table while Pune are languishing at number eight.

It will be a big challenge for Pune to arrest their slide as they are coming into the clash with six straight defeats.

They have failed to fire as a unit as their batting has flopped and bowlers too have not made the desired impact.

Nothing has worked for the hosts, neither the inclusion of Australian skipper Michael Clarke nor the change in batting order. All their efforts have been fruitless as the league has progressed.

Bangalore too have their own problems, but they have a game-changer in Chris Gayle, who has made a significant contribution in keeping them in contention for the play-offs.

His whirlwind batting shifts the momentum in Bangalore’s favour at any given point of time. Then they have AB de Villiers, who on his day is a match-winner and stand-in captain Virat Kohli, who is gradually getting into the groove.

It is not known if regular skipper Daniel Vettori would return for tomorrow’s clash. And if he does so, the team will have a headache to exclude one foreign recruit.

Tillakaratne Dilshan did well yesterday along with Gayle and Muttiah Muralitharan too has done well after being included in the side again. But either of the two Sri Lankans would have to make the way for the captain i.e. if he returns.

Their bowling looks too good for Warriors with Zaheer Khan and R Vinay Kumar in good form. Vinay Kumar after his lively first spell against Mumbai Indians yesterday, has raised the expectations level.

The pace duo is expected to do well against struggling Warriors batsmen. Of all of them, only two — Jesse Ryder and Manish Pandey — have managed to score a half-century.

Watson leads Rajasthan Royals to comfortable win over Pune Warriors: IPL 2012

Category: Cricket News,IPL,IPL Match Results,IPL Pune Warriors,IPL Rajasthan Royals

Australian all-rounder Shane Watson hit a blistering unbeaten 90 as Rajasthan Royals thrashed Pune Warriors by seven wickets in a thoroughly one-sided IPL contest to keep their hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stage alive.

The loss was Pune’s eighth in 12 matches and thus ended any theoretical chance whatsoever of making it to the knock-out stages. Royals now have 12 points and the convincing win have got them upto fourth place with a healthy net run rate of +0.265.

It was the same old story of batting failure for Ganguly and his men. The only change in the script being that Warriors skipper Sourav Ganguly opted to bat first but his team could muster only 125 for six which was certainly not enough to compete.

In reply, Watson sent the Pune bowlers on a leather hunt as his knock came off only 51 balls laced with 10 fours and four sixes. He added 56 runs with Ashok Menaria (18) for the third wicket and Royals won with 22 balls to spare.

Watson feasted on the freebies provided by Warriors’ 36-year-old long-time India discard Murali Kartik as he was hit for three fours and two sixes. The Aussie all-rounder signed off with a boundary.

IPL 2012 Preview: Rajasthan Royals vs Pune Warriors, 08 May 2012

Category: IPL,IPL Pune Warriors,IPL Rajasthan Royals

A more balanced Rajasthan Royals side would look to strengthen its position in the clogged points table when it takes on struggling hosts Pune Warriors in an Indian Premier League 2012 match.

The Sourav Ganguly-led Pune have lost five of their last six clashes although the defeat margins in the last two have been just one and seven runs.

The last time they won was on April 21 when they got the better of formidable Delhi Daredevils.

Rajasthan too had been struggling until they crushed Kings XI Punjab by 43 runs on May 5. Before that win, they too had lost three matches on the trot.

With the coming of all-rounder Shane Watson and pacer Shaun Tait, Rajasthan have got the balance in both bowling and batting.

With skipper Rahul Dravid and young gun Ajinkya Rahane doing well at the top and the middle order too responding, batting has not been much of a problem for them. But they have failed in conquering tight matches.

Pune too have lost close matches and their morale have taken a beating with five defeats in a row. Rajasthan would look to pile on the misery of the hosts.

Pune were hoping that the addition of Michael Clarke in their ranks would give a boost to their batting but the Australian skipper is yet to fire.

In three matches he has scored 56 runs, out of which 41 came in one match.

They have struggled as a batting unit as young Indian players Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey and Mithun Manhas have failed to make an impact.

Kolkata Knight Riders beat Pune Warriors by 7 runs: IPL 2012

Category: IPL,IPL Kolkata Knight Riders,IPL Match Results,IPL Pune Warriors

Kolkata Knight Riders prevailed in their prestige fight against Pune Warriors, defeating the Sourav Ganguly-led side by seven runs in a thrilling Indian Premier League match.

Dubbed as the ‘Battle Royale’ of this edition of IPL, Gautam Gambhir and his boys held their nerves as Pune batting again faltered at the death to slump to their fifth consecutive defeat.

The loss means Pune has put paid to any hopes whatsoever of making it to the play offs, while KKR have consolidated their second position in the standings with 15 points from 11 outings.

Chasing 151 for win, KKR restricted Pune to 143 for eight with Ganguly emerging as the top-scorer with 36 off 35 balls during which he hit four boundaries and a lone six.

Angelo Mathews (35) gave Ganguly good support from the other end as the duo stitched 73 runs for the sixth wicket to keep Pune in the hunt.

Earlier, KKR frittered away a rollicking start as Pune Warriors hit back in the last 10 overs to restrict the hosts to 150 for five at a jam-packed Eden Gardens.

Opting to bat, KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir (55 off 36 balls) played yet another captain’s knock with his third consecutive half-century and together with Brendon McCullum (42 off 43 balls) added 113 runs, their highest opening stand of the season.

The match lived up to its hype as fortunes kept on fluctuating till the last over when the asking rate got too high with 18 runs required off six deliveries.

KKR had the Warriors reeling at 55 for five at one stage before Ganguly and Mathews’ 73-run sixth wicket partnership which came off just 56 balls turned the match in the visitors favour.

Mathews hit Yusuf Pathan for three consecutive sixes to score 19 runs off the 15th over and put Pune in sight of a victory as the equation was reduced to 42 from 30 balls.

But Ganguly’s dismissal soon after he hit a six over long on off Rajat Bhatia in the 18th over swung the match in Pune’s favour.

With 12 needed from last three balls, Mathews perished in search of a big one, brilliantly caught by Laxmi Ratan Shukla at long on to virtually pocket the match for KKR.
