    IPL Pune Warriors

Ganguly happy with truce between Sahara, BCCI

    Category: Cricket News,IPL,IPL 2012 News,IPL Pune Warriors

Mumbai: Glad that the Sahara Group and the BCCI have reached a compromise that paved the way for the participation of Pune Warriors in this year’s IPL, the franchise team’s mentor Sourav Ganguly wants his teammates to take inspiration from Mumbai Indians’ performance in previous season’s Champions League Twenty20.

“Good thing … There are so many players. I always felt that it would be solved and its a good thing that it has been solved. Now we have to see what players we get and do the best,” Ganguly told reporters.

The BCCI and the aggrieved Sahara Group had on Thursday reached a compromise after a series of hectic negotiations over the past few days, paving the way for Pune Warriors’ participation in the fifth edition of the IPL.

Sahara, which had severed ties with the Board and withdrawn the Team India sponsorship on February 4, will return as sponsor following the truce.

Pune Warriors, who would be at a disadvantage having boycotted the recent IPL players auction, can take inspiration from the Mumbai Indians, who won the Champions League Twenty20 last year despite missing several top players, Ganguly said.

“It’s T20 … we saw Mumbai Indians winning Champions League without seven or eight of their best players. That’s a hope for us. We will give our best (shot),” the former India captain said.

Pune Warriors retain Ganguly for 2012 IPL

    Category: Cricket News,IPL,IPL 2012 News,IPL Pune Warriors

New Delhi : Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been retained by Pune Warriors ahead of Indian Premier League’s (IPL) fifth edition.

Ganguly, who was ignored at the 2011 Players’ Auction in January 2011, came into the Pune franchise as a mid-season replacement for injured Ashish Nehra. He will be part of the team as a player and mentor.

The 39-year-old is reported to have been retained for $400,000, his base price in the last edition.

“He (Ganguly) has been one of India’s greatest and most inspirational cricketers. We have no doubt that his presence in the team will boost our prospects in the IPL, and motivate the boys to excel themselves,” Pune Warriors director Abhijit Sarkar said in a statement Saturday.

Ganguly retired from international cricket in 2008 but has been a regular feature in the domestic events. He played for Bengal in the current edition of Ranji Trophy before flying Down Under for commentating in the ongoing India-Australia series. He also captained Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL’s 2008 and 2010 edition.

Rain thwarts the DareDevils and Warriors

The Delhi DareDevils hopes of avoiding a last place finish were thwarted by persistent heavy rain which forced their clash against the Pune Warriors to be abandoned at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.

Having won the toss the DareDevils had reached 56-3 at the start of the 11th over when persistent drizzle forced the players to leave the pitch fall at 20.48 local time.

The rain got gradually heavier as the night when on leaving the umpires with no choice but to abandoned the game at 22.32 local time; both receive one point which leaves the DareDevils in last place just behind the Warriors who also finish on 9 points.

With nothing to play for the DareDevils innings never really got going with only David Warner playing any significant role scoring 19 runs before the ran started to fall.

Warner hit 1 boundary and 2 sixes which proved to be the only highlight of dull innings from a side with absolutely nothing to play for before the rain thankfully brought a premature end to the game.

Delhi DareDevils vs Pune Warriors – IPL 4 – 68th Match

Category: IPL Delhi DareDevils,IPL Pune Warriors

May 21, 2011 : For both these teams, the IPL-4 experience has been a forgettable one. After thirteen matches and seven weeks of grueling cricket, Delhi and Pune find themselves at the bottom of heap. They have had somewhat identical campaigns, losing nine out of thirteen matches, thus one last chance to take the number of wins to five. Plus, there is the ‘wooden spoon’ on the line, the loser in todays match at the Feroz Shah Kotla would finish the tournament as the last placed team.

There is much more than just pride at stake. Delhi have been hit hard by the absence of star batsman and Captain Virendar Sehwag after he went for medical treatment; the stand-in man for him, James Hopes has not been an inspirational leader thus far as Delhi were crushed in both matches under his leadership.

He would be looking to salvage something out of the last tie, even if it is a dead-rubber without any consequence for the teams. Also, Delhi can mend their dismal home record if they overcome Pune who have been equally woeful in the field if not more.

Talking about dismal performances, Pune have more than once demonstrated an unmatched ability to make decisions that make no sense on a cricket field. Why on earth does Yuvraj Singh, the man-of-the-tournament in the recent 2011 world cup, come out to bat with just very few overs left in the innings? Pune have made this monumental blunder for majority of their first season in the IPL. It is a baffling tactic especially when their batting has the propensity to combust in the middle overs. Even the return of ‘Dada’ hasn’t lifted the batting effort in three matches Sourav himself has looked rusty and scratchy. It may be a battle between the ‘also-rans’ of the IPL-4, but for sure would be an intense cricket match given the fact that the winner would avoid the title of ‘weakest team’ in this year’s IPL.
