Dravid Named Captain of Rajasthan Royals
Category: Cricket News,DLF IPL Teams,IPL,IPL 2012 News,IPL Rajasthan RoyalsJaipur, Dec 3 – Indian batting great Rahul Dravid was Saturday named the captain of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Rajasthan Royals. He replaces Australia’s Shane Warne, who led the team for four seasons before announcing his retirement from the cash-rich event earlier this year.
The 38-year-old former India captain has had a great 2011. He has piled on 1067 runs in 11 Tests that includes five centuries. ‘The Wall’ was bought by the Rajasthan franchise for $500,000 in the IPL auctions held in Bangalore in January. Dravid was with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the first three editions.
“I am honoured to lead the Rajasthan Royals. I hope to live up to the confidence shown in me by the franchise and give our fans an exciting season of cricket,” said Dravid in a statement released by Rajasthan Royals.
“I look forward to the valuable inputs from my teammates who are already leading their national sides and clubs. My aim will be to get the best out of a very talented squad and invoke the same team spirit that won the franchise the first IPL and has been a hallmark of the Rajasthan Royals ever since.”
Warne had no hesitation in saying that his successor will take the team to more success.
“He is not only one of the world’s best batsmen, but a leader par excellence. The Royals squad is a bunch of extremely energetic and talented players who know their roles perfectly well and I am sure they will thrive under Dravid’s inspiring leadership. I will be keenly following the Royals and Dravid and would like to wish them the best,” said Warne, who led the team to victory in the inaugural season.

Watson: Was hoping for a day like this but unfortunately it was too late with us going out of the tournament. It is not often that all the skills come together, you gotta make the most of the days like these. Shane has been an amazing mentor throughout my life and to have been involved with him for the last four years here at RR has been a privilege for me. We will miss him definitely, but he won’t go far away from RR and Australian cricket.
Shane Watson is the MoM for his devastating all round performance – 3 wickets, a catch and a brilliant 89 with the bat.
Warne: When someone of the class of Shane Watson plays like that, it just shows how good he is. Disappointing but nice to finish off on a high. If we had won one more, we would’ve been through, but it wasn’t to be. When I finished in Jan 07, I thought that was it, but to be the captain coach of RR has been great. I would like to believe that I have helped Indian cricket.
Rahane, Menaria and Chavan have a great future and would like to see them give it a good shake next year. Never say no, never especially with the career that I have had. Maybe I might come back, because I like the owners a lot. I would like to thank everyone who have helped me in my career.
Sachin: Don’t want to make any excuses, there weren’t many runs on the board and then Watson comes and play that kind of an innings, we have no chance. It is funny when we needed just only one point with 5 games to go, but we have just one game left. There will be some changes for the last game as it is a completely different surface.

Mumbai Indians vs Rajasthan Royals – IPL 4 – 66th Match
Category: IPL,IPL Mumbai Indians,IPL Rajasthan RoyalsMay 20, 2011 : Shane Warne in his last appearance as a professional cricketer is taking on his nemesis for nearly two decades, Sachin Tendulkar. The Warne-Sachin duel would be on display one last time at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as Rajasthan take on Mumbai in a crucial match of IPL-4. However, there is more to it than just the legendary rivalry, Mumbai are in a real danger of losing out on a play-off spot after having been on top of the standings for major part of the season. They seem to have lost the plot, two successive batting failures against relatively weaker teams has put them in a spot of bother. Punjab’s resurgence has spiced up the race for the two vacant slots in the top-four; with the consistent Kolkata the third challenger.
Having said that, Mumbai are superior to a young Rajasthan side in man to man comparison. They have the quality to end Warne’s illustrious career on a sour note. The home bowling attack has some fearsome names, ‘slinger’ Lasith Malinga, accurate Munaf Patel and wily offie Harbhajan Singh.

They also have one of the best fielding units, presence of ‘live wires’ like Kieron Pollard and Andrew Symonds have backed their bowling well. Of late, Batting has been an area of concern. Although, the batting is full of heavyweights like Sachin, Rohit Sharma but it has wilted under pressure more than once. The strong Mumbai batting line-up has not played to potential and it will be a worry for skipper Sachin Tendulkar, the leading-run scorer for the team. Apart from Tendulkar, Ambati Rayudu has been in good form but Mumbai will expect more from local lad Rohit Sharma and Australian Andrew Symonds.
That is where Warne’s Rajasthan have a hope to do an upset of sorts and end their disappointing IPL-4 campaign on a high. For that to happen, Warne would have to weave his magic and marshal his short on resources and inexperienced side with aplomb. The constant chopping and changing hasn’t helped the side with six changes in their last match nearly ending in a farce. Rajasthan has struggled in the batting department with Shane Watson and Ross Taylor not playing as well as they were expected to. However, there would be some motivation for the young Rajasthan players; after all, their talisman is playing his farewell match. They may have nothing at stake as far as the title race is concerned but there would be pride to play for. On the contrary, Mumbai have the pressure to secure 2 points in this match as their next match is against Kolkata.

Kochi Tuskers Kerala vs Rajasthan Royals – IPL 4 – 61st Match – Result
Category: IPL,IPL Kochi Tuskers Kerala,IPL Match Results,IPL Rajasthan RoyalsMay 15, 2011 : All-round performance by Brad Hodge (33 not out & 4-13) helped Kochi Tuskers Kerala thrash Rajasthan Royals by 8 wickets with 12.4 overs to spare in their IPL match at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
It was brilliant performance by Kochi. First they bowled well to restrict Rajasthan under triple figures and then chased it down in just over 7 overs. By this big win, they just give themselves a chance to enter the play-offs, though plenty of permutations and combinations will come into play.
KTK started their innings in explosive fashion. They raced to 38 runs in just 2 overs. McCullum and Mahela were the only two wickets, and Parthiv Patel and Brad Hodge made sure that they see the match through for KTK.
Match Notes
Toss – Kochi Tuskers Kerala won the toss and elected to field.
Result – Kochi Tuskers Kerala beat Rajasthan Royals by 8 wickets.
That margin of victory gives Kochi Tuskers Kerala a sliver of hope for the remainder of the competition, and they had Hodge to owe for such a polished performance. Given a whole four overs to bowl, Hodge spun out four wickets and then hurried the victory with a brisk 33 off 18 balls. By getting home in 7.2 overs, KTK recorded the fourth biggest Twenty20 win ever and second highest in the IPL.
Having removed RR’s openers off successive deliveries – Faiz Fazal rapped on the pads and Rahul Dravid sucked into edging a good away swinger – KTK found further success in the sixth over. Ajinkya Rahane, shuffling across his stumps to try and work Sreesanth away, was hit plumb in front.
Shane Watson opened his shoulders to strike the debutant spinner Padmanabhan Prasanth for two sixes over midwicket to raise the team fifty, and hammered a full toss over long-on to make it 18 off the eight over. But that was as good as it got for Watson, as Prasanth Parameswaran nailed a full delivery that crashed into leg stump.
At 64 for four, RR needed to consolidate. Their run rate was just over seven, so a few quiet overs could be played out. Instead Pinal Shah tried to be the hero only to miscue an attempted big hit off Brad Hodge’s fourth ball to long-on (69 for five). Hodge did the trick for KTK, bowling Jacob Oram for 0 with one that skidded on and brushed Oram’s pads and then adding Shane Warne who went for an expansive slog and dragged the ball back onto his stumps.
Hodge was also involved in the run-out of Ankeet Chavan, before he got Ashok Menaria (31) to slog to the deep. Sreesanth allowed just a single run in his final over, and the final wicket came when Nayan Doshi miscued Parameswaran to midwicket. RR just managed to avoid their lowest total of the season – 81, against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Sreesanth (2-16) and Parameswaran (2-20) shared two Royals wickets each whereas RP Singh (1-17) took the remaining one scalp.
McCullum made short work of the chase, slamming four sixes in his first 11 deliveries. Three of them came in the second over, bowled by Oram, each hit back over the bowler’s head with disdain. So massive was the over for KTK that Mahela Jayawardene’s dismissal off the third ball was forgotten. After two overs, KTK were 38 for one.
Looking for another six, McCullum fell to Nayan Doshi’s first ball but Hodge walked out and collected 14 off the over with a three superb shots down the ground. Parthiv Patel opened his account with an uppercut six, but the shots to cherish were consecutive back-foot drives off Oram which threaded the gap at cover. Hodge was a man in a hurry, collecting fives fours and two sixes in his innings. It was one of the most one-sided victories this season.
