IPL 2012 Preview: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians, 12 May 2012

Category: Cricket News,IPL,IPL Kolkata Knight Riders,IPL Mumbai Indians

Yet to seal their last-four berth, heavyweights Mumbai Indians would look to stop the Kolkata Knight Riders’ six-match winning streak in what promises to be an exciting Indian Premier League contest on Saturday.

Thanks to the scheduling, both the teams face each other for the first time this season despite the tournament already into its business-end.

It has been a contrasting journey for both teams as the Kolkata Knight Riders find themselves comfortably placed at number two with eight wins from 12 outings and virtually assured of a place in the play-offs.

They have lost just once in their last 10 appearances as consistency has been the middle-name of the Knight Riders, a team mired in controversies in its forgettable first three seasons.

On the other hand, the Champions League Twenty20 winners and pre-tournament favourites Mumbai Indians are yet to find consistency and have been slightly lucky with seven wins out of 12.

Mumbai Indians batting has looked ordinary with some domination in patches while their bowling — superbly led by Sri Lankan sling bowler Lasith Malinga — has been quite potent.

The Knight Riders too have been outstanding with their slow bowlers but it’s Gautam Gambhir’s aggressive captaincy and the way he has led from the front that has brought results.

With five half centuries — that included three man-of-the-match performances — Gambhir has not only led by example but has motivated the side.

Bangalore crush Mumbai Indians by 9 wickets: IPL 2012

Category: IPL,IPL Match Results,IPL Mumbai Indians,IPL Royal Challengers Bangalore

Chris Gayle smashed his way to an unbeaten 82 as Royal Challengers Bangalore crushed Mumbai Indians by nine wickets in their Indian Premier League match on Wednesday. The emphatic win takes RCB to fourth position in the points table while Mumbai occupy the third spot.

Gayle remained quite in the early part of RCB run chase of 142 but exploded later on, hitting five fours and six sixes as the visitors romped home with two overs to spare after the visiting bowlers produced a disciplined show by restricting the home side to 141 for six at the Wankhede Stadium.

Gayle’s 59-ball blitz was his fourth 80-plus knock this IPL season.

The West Indian reached his fifty with a huge six of Pragyan Ojha in the 11th over. He struck Ojha for three successive sixes in that over which saw the bowler conceding 22 runs. That over virtually changed the complexion of the game after Mumbai kept it tight, not allowing the match run away quickly to RCB’s favour.

Gayle was though lucky early in his innings as he was dropped by Dwayne Smith off the bowling of R P Singh when he was on 21 in the sixth over and Mumbai paid a heavy price for that costly mistake.

IPL 2012 Preview: Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, 09 May 2012

Category: IPL,IPL Mumbai Indians,IPL Royal Challengers Bangalore

Buoyed by their sensational last-ball victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK), a keyed up Mumbai Indians (MI) take on strong challengers Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in a crucial Indian Premier League (IPL) game, in Mumbai on Wednesday.

While MI have garnered 14 points from 11 matches, RCB are trailing them by three points, having played the same number of games ahead of the high-octane first leg clash.

If MI stopped the Super Kings in their tracks when new recruit Dwayne Smith smashed Ben Hilfenhaus for a six and two fours off the last three balls, RCB were no less impressive in pulling off a thrilling victory over Deccan Chargers.

AB de Villiers’ 17-ball unbeaten 47 swung the game RCB’s way and he, along with another in-form batsman Chris Gayle, is a major threat to Mumbai’s hopes of pulling off their fourth straight victory.

A victory for MI would boost the points tally to 16 with four games left and would help them draw level with Delhi Daredevils, albeit with one game less in hand.

But more importantly it would ease the pressure enormously from their shoulders in the red-hot race to the last-four.

A setback for last year’s runners-up RCB would put them under the same sort of difficulties that are being faced by two-time holders Super Kings after their defeat to MI.

In batting RCB have been well-served by left-handed West Indian powerhouse Gayle (433 runs from 10 games) at the top, and classy right-handed South African de Villiers (292 from 11 games) ? who can switch-hit powerfully to spoil the spinners’ plans – in the middle.

These two batsmen, averaging 48-plus, have shouldered the responsibility of propping up the Bangalore batting admirably in which another key member ? India star Virat Kohli ? has, unfortunately, not lived up to the high expectations.

IPL 5: I was confident of winning the match, says Smith

    Category: Cricket News,IPL,IPL 2012 News,IPL Mumbai Indians

Mumbai: Dwayne Smith had told RP Singh that he could win the match for Mumbai Indians if the paceman could manage to give him strike to face the last three balls.

Mumbai needed 15 off the final four balls when Singh got a single to give the strike back to Smith. And the big-hitting West Indian kept his words by hammering a six and two fours to help Mumbai register a thrilling two-wicket victory over title holders Chennai Super Kings. “I just backed myself. I know as long as I can watch the ball I can do it. I just asked RP [Singh] to give me the three balls that were left. I knew I could do it from there,” Smith said after the match.

Smith, who smacked an unbeaten 24 off nine balls, got the Man-of-the-Match award. Smith also credited Sachin Tendulkar for giving him the confidence when he went to bat at no. 6. “He [Tendulkar] said the wicket was good. He told me to back myself and he was true. It paid off. It’s a big win and we really deserved it as well. I will put it [this innings] up there as one of my best,” he said.

Smith said he had done a similar feat for Barbados in a domestic competition. “I remember winning a game for Barbados. It went into the Super Over after we needed 12 to tie the game. I got two sixes off the last two balls,” he said.
