IPL 2012 Preview: Delhi Daredevils vs Kings XI Punjab, 15 May 2012
Category: IPL,IPL Delhi DareDevils,IPL Kings XI PunjabA rejuvenated Kings XI Punjab will be aiming to keep their play-off hopes alive when they take on table-toppers Delhi Daredevils in an Indian Premier League match in New Delhi on Tuesday.
While Delhi, with 18 points from 13 games, are favourites to make it to the play-offs, Kings XI, who have of late won a few close games, would like to win their remaining three games in order to stay in contention having logged 14 points so far.
The two teams have had contrasting results in their previous matches. While Delhi were completely outplayed by Chennai Super Kings after their top-order flopped miserably, KXIP eked out a victory off the last ball courtesy some lusty shots by stand-in-captain David Hussey and young Gurkeerat Singh Ahluwalia.
The Daredevils have been mostly dependent on their top-order batsmen to fire. Inevitably when skipper Virender Sehwag or David Warner have failed to provide momentum, the home team has looked pretty ordinary as the middle-order batsmen are yet to stand-up and be counted.
Yogesh Nagar and Y Venugopal Rao got the ideal platform to prove their detractors that they too have the firepower but what one saw was a meek effort.
Kings XI Punjab seal a thriller over Deccan Chargers: IPL 2012
Category: Cricket News,IPL,IPL Deccan Chargers,IPL Kings XI Punjab,IPL Match ResultsLate charge by David Hussey (65 not out) and Gurkeerat Singh (29 not out) helped Kings XI Punjab snatch 4-wicket victory over Deccan Chargers in a crucial Indian Premier League match at PCA stadium, Mohali on Sunday.
Skipper Hussey and Singh put on quick-fire unbeaten 45 runs for the seventh wicket to keep themselves in contention for the playoffs spot. Gurkeerat hit last ball four to win the match.
Young Gurkeerat played a gem of an innings with 241.66 strike-rate as he smashed a six and four boundaries in his 12-ball 29 whirlwind knock.
Hussey played a captain’s knock as he whacked five sixes and four fours in his 35-ball blitzkrieg.
Chasing a massive 191-run target, Punjab were in trouble when they lost two wickets in the Dale Steyn’s seventeenth over as they were reduced to 149/6 in 16.4 overs.
Steyn struck twice in an over to dismiss Piyush Chawla (8) and Siddharth Chitnis (11) to put Deccan on top for a while but it turned out to be in vain.
Punjab lost Azhar Mahmood (31) after he revive their run chase with Hussey in the middle overs.
Leg-spinner Amit Mishra struck in the thirteenth over to dismiss Mahmood. Mahmood hit a six and two boundaries in his 20-ball rapid knock and added 44 runs for the fourth wicket with Hussey.
Punjab lost three top-order batsmen inside eight overs against Deccan.
Manpreet Gony got rid of in-form Punjab batsman Mandeep Singh (28) in the eighth over to reduce the hosts to 56/3 in 7.2 overs. Mandeep hit five boundaries in his quick-fire 20 balls innings.
Punjab lost Shaun Marsh (11) and Nitin Saini (3) inside five overs as they started their run chase on the wrong foot.
Pacer Dan Christian struck twice in two overs to dismiss Marsh and Saini and reduced Punjab to 26/2 in 4.4 overs.
Electing to bat, Shikhar Dhawan (71) and Cameron White (67 not out) shared quick 96-run stand to help Deccan Chargers post 190/4 against Kings XI Punjab.

IPL 2012 Preview: Kings XI Punjab vs Deccan Chargers, 13 May 2012
Category: IPL,IPL Deccan Chargers,IPL Kings XI PunjabAs the battle to reach the play-off stage in the Indian Premier League gets fierce, Kings XI Punjab find themselves in a must-win situation as they take on tournament-laggards Deccan Chargers at the PCA stadium on Sunday.
Punjab’s clash with the Hyderabad team may be inconsequential for the Kumar Sangakkara-led team but the local favourites can ill-afford any slip-up at this stage as there is a mad scramble among the teams to seal a berth for the play-offs.
Of the nine teams taking part in the competition, the Chargers have just two wins from 13 games. They along with Pune Warriors, who are currently placed eighth with four wins from 14, are out of the hunt.
With 12 points from an equal number of matches, the Punjab side, which managed to reach semi-final only once, in 2008, is placed at seventh in the table.
While top-of-the-table-team Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders may have virtually assured themselves of a berth in the play-offs, among rest of the five teams — Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Punjab — the battle has got intense.
Punjab have tough games coming up as they haven’t played Delhi Daredevils yet and will be taking them on in Delhi after Sunday’s match followed by another one at Dharamsala later.
IPL 5: Mandeep disappointed to miss India A spot
Category: Cricket News,IPL,IPL 2012 News,IPL Kings XI PunjabNew Delhi: Kings Punjab XI opener Mandeep Singh, who has impressed one and all with his good batting in the ongoing IPL 5, is disappointed at not having made it to the India A team for the West Indies tour. “I’m disappointed but you can hardly do anything about it. I was hopeful of getting a call-up for the West Indies tour but it happened otherwise. But my job will be to keep up the good work in this IPL and hopefully I will make it to the A team when the next tour is announced,” Mandeep told PTI.
Mandeep has been a prolific scorer for Punjab having garnered 458 runs in the last Ranji season with an average of 76 plus apart from 359 runs in 12 IPL games in this edition. “I was performing well for the last two years in the domestic circuit and was hopeful of selection but it’s not in my hands. I am not reading too much into it and just concentrating on performing well in the ongoing edition,” he said.
Talking about their away game against table-toppers Delhi Daredevils on May 15 at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium here, Mandeep conceded that it’s a tough match for them given Delhi’s formidable line-up. “It’s a kind of tough match for us. They are playing really well and are leading the points table but we are also equally in good touch. If you play to your potential, you can beat the favourites on any given day. We just need to continue with the winning momentum,” he said.
Kings XI Punjab thrash Deccan Chargers by 25 runs: IPL 2012
Category: IPL,IPL 2012 News,IPL Deccan Chargers,IPL Kings XI Punjab,IPL Match ResultsKings XI Punjab rode on a smashing half-century by Mandeep Singh and a superlative performance by their bowers to notch up a comfortable 25-run victory over Deccan Chargers in a lop-sided Indian Premier League match on Tuesday. By the virtue of this win, Punjab have now moved to No 5 position in the Points Table.
Invited to bat, Mandeep cracked a strokeful 75 off 48 balls to help Punjab post a challenging 170 for five in their stipulated 20 overs.
The visitors then returned to restrict the Chargers to 145 for eight to keep their hopes alive of reaching the play-off stage by reaching the fifth position in the IPL points table.
Chasing 171 to win, opener Daniel Harris (30) gave Deccan some hope initially but they failed to build partnerships and kept losing wickets in regular intervals.
For Punjab, Praveen Kumar, Parvinder Awana and David Hussey took two wickets each to emerge as the peak of the bowlers. They were supported well by Azhar Mahmood (0/31) and Piyush Chawla (1/33).
The chargers had a tottering start as they lost inform opener Shikhar Dhawan (8) and first down Parthiv Patel (17) cheaply to slip to 31 for two in the first five overs.
In the seventh over, Harris picked up a six off the first ball by Chawla and Cameron White played an inside-out shot in the last delivery to end the over with a boundary.
In the next over, Harris picked up a four off Ramesh Powar at the square leg area before whacking one at the mid-wicket area for another boundary.
Punjab then tightened things up with seamers Awana and Mahmood giving away just four and two runs in the next two over respectively.
