IPL 2012 Preview: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians, 12 May 2012

Category: Cricket News,IPL,IPL Kolkata Knight Riders,IPL Mumbai Indians

Yet to seal their last-four berth, heavyweights Mumbai Indians would look to stop the Kolkata Knight Riders’ six-match winning streak in what promises to be an exciting Indian Premier League contest on Saturday.

Thanks to the scheduling, both the teams face each other for the first time this season despite the tournament already into its business-end.

It has been a contrasting journey for both teams as the Kolkata Knight Riders find themselves comfortably placed at number two with eight wins from 12 outings and virtually assured of a place in the play-offs.

They have lost just once in their last 10 appearances as consistency has been the middle-name of the Knight Riders, a team mired in controversies in its forgettable first three seasons.

On the other hand, the Champions League Twenty20 winners and pre-tournament favourites Mumbai Indians are yet to find consistency and have been slightly lucky with seven wins out of 12.

Mumbai Indians batting has looked ordinary with some domination in patches while their bowling — superbly led by Sri Lankan sling bowler Lasith Malinga — has been quite potent.

The Knight Riders too have been outstanding with their slow bowlers but it’s Gautam Gambhir’s aggressive captaincy and the way he has led from the front that has brought results.

With five half centuries — that included three man-of-the-match performances — Gambhir has not only led by example but has motivated the side.

Kolkata secure easy 6-wickets win over Delhi Daredevils: IPL 2012

Category: IPL,IPL Delhi DareDevils,IPL Kolkata Knight Riders,IPL Match Results

Kolkata Knight Riders thrashed Delhi Daredevils by six wickets in a lopsided contest to emerge as the table leaders in the Indian Premier League on Monday night.

Chasing a modest target of 154, KKR knocked off the runs with eight balls to spare, courtesy Brendon McCullum’s 56 and his 68-run opening stand with skipper Gautam Gambhir (36).

KKR now lead the points table with 17 points and are all but through to the knock-out stage.

With Sehwag and Kevin Pietersen doing the bulk of the scoring in the earier matches, the Daredevils middle-order was put to test for the first time and it failed miserably.

The likes of Ross Taylor, Yogesh Nagar should take bulk of the blame as they couldn’t stand-up and be counted when their team needed them most. The defeat is certainly a wake-up call for Sehwag’s boys.

The Daredevils lost the match within the Powerplay overs as Gambhir and McCullum started off from where they left against Pune Warriors.

McCullum, who has started to find some form, smashed Irfan Pathan for successive boundaries while Gambhir hit left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem for two fours and a six in the fourth over of the innings that fetched 16 runs.

In the next Umesh Yadav over, the duo got another 13 runs as the 50 came off in only five overs.

The Daredevils pacers lacked the discipline as they couldn’t bowl to one channel which made life much easier for Gambhir-McCullum combination.

Finally Varun Aaron, coming back from stress reaction injury, finally dismissed Gambhir. It was a delivery that climbed up on Gambhir as he tried to play the dab-shot to thirdman only to inside edge onto his stumps.

However, there was no stopping McCullum as he continued playing his shots with ease. With Jacques Kallis (30, 27 balls, 3×4) playing the role of a second fiddle to perfection, McCullum repeatedly bisected the fielders between fine leg and mid-wicket after being gifted with deliveries on his pads. He completed his 50 with a couple off Morne Morkel off 40 balls.

Umesh Yadav brought some life back to the lop-sided contest with twin blows as both Kallis and McCullum (56, 44 balls, 7×4) were dismissed, being hurried onto their shots by short-pitched deliveries but that was too late in the day.

Earlier, Delhi Daredevils didn’t fire as a batting unit as Kolkata Knight Riders restricted them to a manageable 153 for nine in their stipulated 20 overs.

Opting to bat first, Daredevils started off well with Sehwag blasting 23 off only nine deliveries but failed to convert his good start.

The likes of David Warner (21), Mahela Jayawardene (30) got out just when they looked set while Ross Taylor (16)’s woeful run with the willow affected Daredevils’ chance of putting up a good score.

It was only due to Irfan Pathan’s (36, 22 balls, 4×4, 1×6) lusty blows that helped Kolkata to cross the 150-mark.

As many four batsmen were out in the final over of the innings bowled by ‘mystery spinner’ Sunil Narine who again had enviable figures of two for 23 while Jacques Kallis (2/20) made telling impact removing both Sehwag and Warner.

Sehwag was again off the blocks in a flash as he hit a couple of boundaries and a huge six over mid-wicket off left-arm seamer Pradeep Sangwan in the second over of the innings.

Warner, who looked scratchy during the first few deliveries, then got his act together as he hit Brett Lee for a straight six and followed it up with a cover drive.

In only 3.2 overs, Sehwag-Warner duo added 40 runs and it looked like KKR bowlers were in for a ‘Knightmare’ when Kallis provided twin-breakthrough.

First he had Sehwag adjudged leg before when he was trying to work the ball on the leg-side. So confident was Kallis that he didn’t even bother to appeal at the first go. Sehwag had hit three boundaries and a six in his 23.

Warner (21, 19 balls, 2×4, 1×6) hit another flashy boundary which was more like a shot of a desperate batsman before Kallis got the dangerous Aussie to edge one to Brendon McCullum behind stumps.

Jayawardene survived a confident caught behind appeal after which he had a heated exchange with opposition skipper Gambhir. Ultimately it was Ross Taylor who had to intervene.

The Sri Lankan skipper was again lucky when McCullum dropped him off Kallis’ bowling. But then he started showing his class.

A deft glance off Sangwan, a powerful square cut and swept six off Rajat Bhatia were sheer class. The lap shot over keeper’s head off Sunil Narine was also a delight to watch as he added 46 runs for the third wicket with Taylor.

But just when he was starting to look threatening, he called for a non-existent single and failed to beat Gambhir’s underarm throw. Jayawardene scored 30 off 27 balls with three fours and a six.

Taylor’s poor form continued as he failed to middle a single delivery. The dot balls he played added to the pressure and the initial impetus provided Sehwag was long gone.

Finally, he was holed out in the deep off Sangwan’s bowling. The Black Caps skipper managed 16 off only 27 balls.

IPL 2012 Preview: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Delhi Daredevils, 07 May 2012

Category: IPL,IPL Delhi DareDevils,IPL Kolkata Knight Riders

Virender Sehwag’s flamboyance will be put to test against Gautam Gambhir’s gumption when leaders Delhi Daredevils take on second-placed Kolkata Knight Riders in a top-of-the-table clash in Indian Premier League on Monday.

As far as the points table is concerned, only a single point separates the two teams. While Delhi Daredevils have 16 points from 10 matches with eight wins, KKR aren’t far behind with 15 points from 11 encounters with seven wins.

On paper, the Daredevils are slightly better side with a formidable batting line-up and a balanced bowling attack while KKR have relied a bit more on individual performances from skipper Gambhir and mystery off-spinner Sunil Narine.

The batting depth of the Daredevils can be gauged by the fact that although someone like Kevin Pietersen is back in England to join national team, the Delhi outfit have another match-winner in David Warner joining their ranks.

While the Daredevils come into the match after a four-day break which has helped the players recharge their batteries, KKR will be riding high after their inspiring seven-run win in the prestige match against the Sourav Ganguly-led-Pune Warriors yesterday.

Both the sides are all but assured of a place in the knock-out stages, but a victory in the marquee clash will not only bolster the confidence but also help them consolidate their position at the top.

Both Gambhir and Sehwag know that very well and would be ready to put in those extra yards to log full points tomorrow.

Kolkata Knight Riders beat Pune Warriors by 7 runs: IPL 2012

Category: IPL,IPL Kolkata Knight Riders,IPL Match Results,IPL Pune Warriors

Kolkata Knight Riders prevailed in their prestige fight against Pune Warriors, defeating the Sourav Ganguly-led side by seven runs in a thrilling Indian Premier League match.

Dubbed as the ‘Battle Royale’ of this edition of IPL, Gautam Gambhir and his boys held their nerves as Pune batting again faltered at the death to slump to their fifth consecutive defeat.

The loss means Pune has put paid to any hopes whatsoever of making it to the play offs, while KKR have consolidated their second position in the standings with 15 points from 11 outings.

Chasing 151 for win, KKR restricted Pune to 143 for eight with Ganguly emerging as the top-scorer with 36 off 35 balls during which he hit four boundaries and a lone six.

Angelo Mathews (35) gave Ganguly good support from the other end as the duo stitched 73 runs for the sixth wicket to keep Pune in the hunt.

Earlier, KKR frittered away a rollicking start as Pune Warriors hit back in the last 10 overs to restrict the hosts to 150 for five at a jam-packed Eden Gardens.

Opting to bat, KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir (55 off 36 balls) played yet another captain’s knock with his third consecutive half-century and together with Brendon McCullum (42 off 43 balls) added 113 runs, their highest opening stand of the season.

The match lived up to its hype as fortunes kept on fluctuating till the last over when the asking rate got too high with 18 runs required off six deliveries.

KKR had the Warriors reeling at 55 for five at one stage before Ganguly and Mathews’ 73-run sixth wicket partnership which came off just 56 balls turned the match in the visitors favour.

Mathews hit Yusuf Pathan for three consecutive sixes to score 19 runs off the 15th over and put Pune in sight of a victory as the equation was reduced to 42 from 30 balls.

But Ganguly’s dismissal soon after he hit a six over long on off Rajat Bhatia in the 18th over swung the match in Pune’s favour.

With 12 needed from last three balls, Mathews perished in search of a big one, brilliantly caught by Laxmi Ratan Shukla at long on to virtually pocket the match for KKR.
