Category: IPL,IPL Deccan Chargers,IPL Kings XI Punjab,IPL Match ResultsMay 21st, 2011 : Today was a match between Kings XI Punjab vs Deccan Chargers in the IPL Cricket Season 4 2011. This was the 67th match of the league. The match was played at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala. Team Kings XI Punjab won the toss and elected to field first. The Kings XI’s valiant late charge for a play-off spot came to an end on Saturday when they suffered a 82-run defeat at the hands of the Deccan Chargers.
The Punjab team needed to win all of their last five matches to have a chance of making the play-offs, and proceeded to win four games on the trot. However, they came unstuck against a Deccan team playing for nothing but pride.
The match was conceded in the first half, when Adam Gilchrist chose to field and was let down by his butter-fingered fielders who spilled five chances during Deccan Chargers’ season-high 198 for two.

Shikhar Dhawan, with an unbeaten 95, and Dwaraka Ravi Teja, who live a charmed live during his 41-ball 60, were the architects of that big total and in reply KXIP faded with a whimper. DC’s hat-trick of wins at the end of a disappointing season was polished with Amit Mishra seizing a hat-trick in the 16th over.
In response the home side were in trouble early, losing Paul Valthaty (5) in the second over. Shaun Marsh (13) bludgeoned three fours before departing an over after Valthaty.
The early setbacks meant that any victory charge would require a monumental effort from Gilchrist and for a time it appeared that the Australian – with some assistance from Dinesh Karthik – may just have a chance.
However, when Gilchrist departed for a well played 51, hammering a full delivery from Daniel Christian straight to Cameron White at extra cover the game seemed all but over. Karthik’s dismissal two balls later confirmed the result.
With the run rate rapidly careering out of control, the incoming batsmen were forced to seek maximums from the outset. The necessary tactic proved deadly with wickets tumbling with great regularity.
Credit must go to the Chargers who fielded well and bowled with great discipline. Amit Mishra (four for nine) was particularly impressive, and the spinner was rewarded for his efforts with a hat-trick. First Ryan McLaren was well caught in the deep by Christian, then Mandeep Singh was stumped as he darted out of his crease. The deed was sealed when Ryan Harris cut straight to second slip.
Earlier, Shikhar Dhawan just missed out on a century and Dwa ka Ravi Teja was dropped in the first over by Paul Valthaty, then again on 24 by Piyush Chawla before Ryan Harris put him down twice more.
The opening batsman took full advantage of his fortune, moving to 60 from 41 balls before he was finally punched by Abhishek Nayar off the bowling of Valthaty.
With his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan also in good form, Deccan’s opening partnership was worth 131 from 13.2 overs.
Although JP Duminy managed just 12 after being promoted to number three in the order, Dhawan continued his assault on the Punjab bowlers, hammering 14 fours and one six to finish unbeaten on 95 from 57 balls.
A century would have been no more than he deserved, and could have been achieved had Cameron White (15 not out) managed to give his partner the strike for more than one delivery in the final over.

Kings XI Punjab vs Deccan Chargers – IPL 4 – 67th Match
Category: IPL,IPL Deccan Chargers,IPL Kings XI PunjabMay 21, 2011 : From being the weakest team of the tournament to a scenario where they could well find themselves playing play-offs, Punjab have been the team that has given the fans lot to cheer with blockbuster batting displays, prime reason for their renaissance. Not many had given them chance of where Priety Zinta owned team stand today with one group match still to play. They were certainly thin on bowling resources, though, batting had many of it.
True to their reputation, most of heavyweights in the batting lineup scored big with Shaun Marsh and new batting sensation Paul Valthaty occupying first two slots in the ‘Orange Cup’ chart. Arguably the most sizzling innings of IPL-4 came from their skipper Adam Gilchrist who tore apart Bangalore to set up a huge total and take them at a striking distance from making it to the play-offs.

Gilly’s blistering century was a remainder that age is just a number and that runs, that too with some authority, can be made even at the age of 42 years.Of late bowling has also come good with out of form Piyush Chawla among the wickets by getting his leg spinners to land on right spot and foxing batsmen with his well disguised googly.
Though, a play-off spot isn’t entirely in their hands as they will have to wait for the results of the games featuring Kolkata and Mumbai as three of them battle for two vacant slots with Chennai and Bangalore already through. Gilchrist’s side lost five marches in the middle stages of the tournament on a trot and that could well come to haunt them but either side of that unproductive period Punjab have been brilliant and breath of fresh air in the tournament. To give themselves the best chance of making it to the top four, Punjab will have to overcome a stiff challenge from Hyderabad which despite being out of the title race have been on a roll with back to back convincing wins against Mumbai and Pune. What gives Punjab advantage though is the fact that the encounter is going to be played at Dharamshala, the same venue where Gilly and company mauled Bangalore. The high altitude makes the cricket ball to travel big and long that suits the big hitters from the home side.
Without their first choice skipper Kumar Sangakkara, who will be rendering national duties in England, the visitors will be charged up to finish their unsuccessful campaign on a high. Hyderabad haven’t played to their potential and lying at eight position in the standing doesn’t justify to the talented pool of players they have. Arguably, having the most varied bowling attack in the tournament but that didn’t count for much as batsmen failed to deliver the goods at the crucial juncture. With nothing to lose kind of a scenario, Hyderabad might be tempted to blood some fresh faces. For now, focus will be more on Punjab and that they have chance to make it to the play-off are bound to be under pressure more than Hyderabad.

Pune Warriors vs Deccan Chargers – IPL 4 – 62nd Match – Result
Category: IPL,IPL Deccan Chargers,IPL Match Results,IPL Pune WarriorsMay 16th, 2011 : Deccan Chargers may be out of the competition, but they’re continuing to try and bring a couple teams down with them. A tidy bowling display kept Pune Warriors to 136, and a comfortable chase made easy work of that target. DC’s openers began strongly, taking 57 off the Powerplay, and after they were dismissed in succession the chase was completed without fuss by the middle order.
Chasing just 137 for victory, the Chargers were off to a fine start as openers Sunny Sohal (34) and Shikhar Dhawan (28) put on 67 off eight overs. A quickfire cameo of 25 from Kumar Sangakarra then all but sealed the win, although questions will be asked about a lacklustre Warriors team that seemed to give up very early and never applied any real pressure after the opening stand.
Match Notes
Toss - Deccan Chargers won the toss and elected to field
Result - Deccan Chargers beat Pune Warriors by 6 wickets
JP Duminy will be pleased he managed to get some runs behind his name, although his 23 was the scratchiest of the top-order innings.
Having scratched together a poor total, PW needed to come out and take wickets but they failed to apply the squeeze early on. Sunny Sohal led the way in a solid opening stand, heaving and swishing 34 off 28 balls with two sixes, and even the dismissal of Shikhar Dhawan for 28 wasn’t a roadblock.
Kumar Sangakkara and JP Duminy kept the asking rate within control through risk-free cricket. They were allowed to get their eye in, knocking the singles around, and when the ball was dropped even fractionally short they latched on with cuts and pulls.
A 35-run stand came to an end when Sangakkara nicked a thin edge off Rahul Sharma and walked, but Duminy and Christian hastened the victory by striking Yuvraj for 12 in the following over. Duminy too fell looking to hit a boundary, but Yuvraj failed to apply pressure and DC got home with four deliveries in hand.
Leg-spinner Rahul Sharma was the one Pune player to impress, continuing his wonderful tournament with fine figures of two for 25 in his four overs. South African fast bowler Wayne Parnell took one for 27 in 3.2 overs.
Earlier, Amit Mishra, Daniel Christian and Pragyan Ojha took 2 wickets each as Deccan restricted Pune to 136/9.
Mitchell Marsh top scored for Pune hitting 37 runs off 28 balls with the help of 3 sixes and a four before he was clean bowled by Ojha in the last over.
Daniel Christian had captain Yuvraj Singh caught behind by Kumar Sangakkara to reduce Pune Warriors to 92/7. Yuvraj hit a six and 3 fours in his 17-ball 23 before falling to Christian.
Sourav Ganguly failed to trouble the scorers as he gave a simple catch to Pragyan Ojha in the covers off Christian. Pune lost their third wicket when Ojha clean bowled Manish Pandey. Pandey hit a six and 3 fours in his 20-ball 23 before falling to Ojha.
In the next over, Amit Mishra took a simple return catch to dismiss Robin Uthappa and on the next ball Mithun Manhas edged a wrong ‘un onto his stumps. Pune lost their sixth wicket when Jean-Paul Duminy took a simple return catch to dismiss Callum Ferguson.
Ravi Teja took a good catch in the covers to dismiss Pune Warriors opener Jesse Ryder off Dale Steyn. Ryder hit a six and a four in his 14-ball 18 before falling to Steyn. The breakthrough came after Deccan Chargers captain Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and chose to bowl.
Having won his first match chasing, and now his last of the season, Sangakkara will have plenty of time on the flight to England to ponder on what could have been had DC’s resurgence come a couple weeks earlier.
