IPL 2012 Preview: Delhi Daredevils vs Chennai Super Kings, 12 May 2012
Category: IPL,IPL Chennai Super Kings,IPL Delhi DareDevilsThey might be upbeat after a narrow win but defending champions Chennai Super Kings’ chances of making the playoffs are still far from good as they take on tournament-leaders Delhi Daredevils in a crucial Indian Premier League (IPL) 2012 match.
The four-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals last night came as a massive boost for the two-time defending champions, who are placed fourth in the table with 13 points with six wins and an equal number of losses from their 13 matches so far.
Even a win would not be enough for Chennai to make the next grade as five teams – Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab – have four more matches to go.
The Daredevils and Knight Riders enjoy the top two positions with 18 and 17 points, respectively from 12 matches each and these two would have lesser problems in making the semifinal.
Delhi had emerged victorious the last time CSK clashed with them but given that tomorrow’s match is a home game for Chennai, the result could be different.
Delhi are ruling the roost thanks to consistence performances by captain Virender Sehwag with Australian import David Warner adding to their firepower.

Delhi are ruling the roost thanks to consistence performances by captain Virender Sehwag with Australian import David Warner adding to their firepower. Even though Mahela Jayawardene and Ross Taylor have not been among the runs.
Home conditions and fans support will go in favour of Chennai, who boast of a better batting line up on paper and their bowlers have provided the required oxygen for winning matches. Chennai seem to be better chasers and have played to their potential after bowlers succeeded in restricting the rival batsmen. But if Sehwag, Jayawardene and Warner fire in unison and post a solid total, Delhi’s bowlers Irfan Pathan, Shahbaz Nadeem and Morne Morkel would hold the edge.
Chennai Super Kings beat Rajasthan Royals by 4 wickets: IPL 2012
Category: Cricket News,IPL,IPL Chennai Super Kings,IPL Match Results,IPL Rajasthan RoyalsChennai Super Kings kept alive their chances of qualifying for the play-offs by eking out a four-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals in a crucial Indian Premier League match on Thursday.
With this win, Chennai are now placed fourth in the IPL Points Table.
After restricting Rajasthan to 126 for six, CSK rode on Albie Morkel and Srikkanth Anirudha’s late bursts to romp home with 11 balls to spare.
However, CSK’s run chase were off to a bad start as they lost wickets at regular intervals to totter at 84 for six at one stage.
Chasing a modest total, CSK were dealt an early blow when Shane Watson went through the defence of a struggling Murali Vijay in the first over.
New man in Suresh Raina (23 off 17) played a cameo before he was brilliantly caught by Ajinkya Rahane off Pankaj Singh.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s decision to promote Dwayne Bravo up the order failed to yield the desired result after the West Indian was caught at deep square-leg by Stuart Binny off Siddharth Trivedi in the 12th over.
To make matters worse for CSK, Michael Hussey fell victim of an uncessary mix up with Dhoni in the next over.
Needing 30 off the last three overs, Morkel and Anirudha scored identical six-ball 18 and stitched undefeated 43 runs for the seventh wicket to guide CSK to the vital win.
Morkel and Anirudha tore apart the Australian duo of Watson and Shaun Tait to notch up the required runs in 18.1 overs.
By virtue of this win, CSK moved up to the fourth position in the standings with 13 points from as many games, while Rajasthan have slipped to the sixth spot with 12 points from 13 games.
Earlier, CSK produced a disciplined bowling performance to restrict Rajasthan to 126 for six.
Sent into bat, Ben Hilfenhaus (2/8) produced a stunning opening spell to dent Rajasthan’s prospects at the start.

IPL 2012 Preview: Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings, 10 May 2012
Category: IPL,IPL Chennai Super Kings,IPL Rajasthan RoyalsUpbeat after their two consecutive victories, Rajasthan Royals would aim for a hat-trick of wins and inch closer to a playoffs spot when they take on an insipid Chennai Super Kings in an Indian Premier League match.
Rajasthan have the winning momentum with them and have emerged from the shock of four consecutive defeats by posting two impressive wins over Kings XI Punjab and Pune Warriors.
The match will be a keenly-fought contest because a defeat here might just spoil the chances of either team to make it to playoffs.
The team composition for the previous two matches has been remarkable for Rajasthan Royals. With Australian all-rounder Shane Watson and pacer Shaun Tait in the side, they have proved that they are better as a team than their more fancied rivals.
Shane Watson has been in fine form both with the bat and ball while Tait has proved that he is more than a handful in conditions that suit him.
The batting of the hosts revolves round the opening partnership of skipper Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane who has surrendered his orange cap to Delhi skipper Virender Sehwag.
Shane Watson, at number three, has added strength by smashing the bowlers while Ashok Menaria, Brad Hodge and Owais Shah have played their role to perfection.
The bowling has been consistent and Shaun Tait, who had to wait for a couple of games to get a chance, has been lethal in the past two matches. The reliable Sidhartha Trivedi and Watson give a settled look to bowling.
On the other hand, champions for the past two years, Chennai Super Kings have not been in prime form this season and are languishing at sixth with five victories and six defeats.
They have not been able to finish off close games and have lacked consistency.
One individual can change match in T20: Fleming
Category: Cricket News,IPL,IPL 2012 News,IPL Chennai Super KingsMumbai: Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming on Sunday said that the way Dwayne Smith won today’s match for Mumbai Indians, it shows the unpredictability of the Twenty20 format, in which one individual can change the result of a match with his performance.
Smith, playing his first game after being flown in as a late replacement for the injured Australian Mitchell Johnson, piloted MI to a two-wicket win with a fine unbeaten knock of 24 off just nine balls, including a six and two fours in the last three balls.
“Take your hats off to Dwayne Smith, it was an amazing innings. We lost by a small margin. It was a real roller-coaster, wasn’t it? That’s the beauty of IPL. The nature of T20 is the game can be won or lost by an individual. We saw that today,” said the former New Zealand skipper after his team lost the match in the last ball.
Chasing 174 for victory, MI were cruising well at 144 for one with Sachin Tendulkar (74 off 44 balls) and Rohit Sharma (60 off 46 balls) going great guns with a splendid century partnership before the hosts lost wickets in a heap. “It was a great game, phenomenal see-sawing throughout the game. We looked down and out but were back with great fielding,” Fleming said, referring to the acrobatic catch taken by Faf du Plessis at short extra cover to send back Tendulkar that triggered a collapse which saw MI lose seven wickets for 15 runs.
